Major Search Engines & Directories

NB: Before submitting to any of the major engines and directories listed below, do a URL search to see whether your site is already in their database. To do this, simply click on the left-hand side links to take you to that engine's home page and then type in your website address into the search box.
eg. Type in.. www.mydomain.com.au and see if you are listed. If your site is already listed, there is no point to doing further submissions. In fact, you might annoy them.... so don't!

  • Google - www.google.com  - [ submit url ]
    Submit to Google if it will make you feel better. However the best way to get results in Google is via links to your website from other sites that are frequently visited by the Google indexing robot. 
  • dmoz - www.dmoz.com  - [ submit url ]
    This is the great volunteer directory that was intended to become the 800lb gorilla of the search scene. Sadly it has now deteriorated to the point that it can take months (or years in some cases) to get your site listed. Do it if you want, but don't have any expectations of success! 
  • Alexa - www.alexa.com
    To submit your URL: First search for your domain, and when your domain result appears, click on "Overview" (under the heading "Explore This Site" and then click "Correct errors and omissions in this listing" at the bottom of the result page).
  • About.com - about.com 
    To submit to About.com: Select the appropriate category where you would like a listing, then click the "Help" link in the menu on the left. You should see details about how to request a link for that particular category.
  • Scrub The Web - www.scrubtheweb.com  - [ submit url ]
    A very easy submission process on this engine. 
  • Jayde - www.jayde.com  - [ submit url ]
    Google really likes this long-standing business directory, and this is a place to start publicizing your new website. Just fill out the initial form and then you will receive a couple of emails with clear instructions to ensure your site goes into the most appropriate category in the directory. 
  • ExactSEEK - www.exactseek.com  - [ submit url ]
    Definitely worthwhile listing in this active search engine, although you do have to register as a member, however it is FREE and you are allowed to register up to 10 websites per membership. 
  • Top 50 - www.zensearch.com  - [ submit url ]
    You may submit your web site information for inclusion in their directory index. Simply fill out the form and press submit.
  • CANLinKs - www.canlinks.net  - [ submit url ]
    Emphasis on Canada related links, but accepts submissions from elsewhere. A trifle time-consuming but probably worthwhile.
  • InfoTiger - www.infotiger.com  - [ submit url ]
    Quite a popular minor search engine, and a very easy submission process. 
  • Cipinet - www.cipinet.com  - [ submit url ]
    A very easy submission process, although I am not familiar with this minor search engine.  If the submit url link sends you to their main page, then you can find the "submit your site" button in their top line of links, just below the search box, second from the right end.
  • Illumirate - www.illumirate.com  - [ submit url ]
    You need to search this directory to find the most appropriate category, and then drill down a few more levels until you see the "Add your site to this category". If you get lost, they have very good help files available. Do it if you've got the time :-)) 
  • mozDex - www.mozdex.com  - [ submit url ]
    mozDex is a new search engine that uses open source search technologies to create an open and fair index. You need to email your details to the administrator, but it seems a reasonably good search engine and probably worth listing with.
  • AccessWeb - www.accessweb.ws  - [ submit url ]
    This site requires you to register as a member in order to submit a URL. It appears to be free, but I haven't tried it yet.
  • Search Hippo - www.searchhippo.com  - [ submit url ]
    Another directory seeking reciprocal linking, however it doesn't appear to be compulsory.  Registration required in order to submit your URL.
  • Search66 - search66.com  - [ submit url ]
    A search engine and directory site that allows you to list simultaneously on many websites in its network.  Free listing and simple but the links look low quality.
  • Exalead - www.exalead.com  - [ submit url ]

    •  A free to list website that's a decent alternative to Google, yahoo, etc...
